BTC Names Next WTCS Ambassador

March 10, 2021

Blackhawk Technical College is pleased to announce that Amy Powell of Janesville has been selected to participate in the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) District Ambassador program. The program selects one student from each of the state’s 16 technical college districts to act as advocates for vocational and technical education. Students serve a one-year term and are called upon to make special appearances, give presentations and participate in various events on behalf of the WTCS.

Amy, a student in the Human Resources program, has been recognized by her instructors for her tenacity, perseverance, and grit. As a non-traditional student pursuing her degree in a pandemic, the journey has not been absent of challenges. Her struggles will help her in the role as an ambassador as she knows firsthand the trials that many technical college students face.

“As an older student, I can explain how hard it was to decide to go back to school after being out for so long,” explained Amy. “I work full-time, have a family, and last semester I got COVID-19. I was still able to catch up on my classes and finish before the deadline.”

“Amy worked very hard at some content that she found very challenging, and I was especially impressed with the fact that she held herself to a high standard, regardless of how difficult she found the work to be. Amy also maintained a very positive attitude through the struggles of an unusual and overwhelming semester,” said Melissa Dix, Web Software Development Instructor.

To be considered for this honor, students must be nominated by faculty or staff and complete an application packet. Students are then selected to participate in the interview process. During the interview, students deliver a presentation describing their personal journey and decision to attend a technical college.

Amy will represent Blackhawk Technical College at the state-level, and will also participate in several events throughout the year.

Amy plans to give all she can to her new Ambassador position. She explained, “This is all related to my degree program. I look forward to helping people, talking with people, and being a part of a team.”
