For about a decade, Brittany Oren has worked in the Dental Assisting field. But when Blackhawk launched its new Dental Hygiene program last fall, she saw a path to pursue her goal of becoming a dental hygienist.

Brittany, who is a Janesville native and a graduate of Milton High School, was able to finish all of her Dental Hygiene prerequisites online, which enabled her to do them from home and not have to send her kids to daycare.

Brittany said she has found Blackhawk to be supportive.

“I am never left to fend for myself,” she said. “The instructors are also there for you and answer any questions, no matter what they may be.”

Brittany was also the recipient of the Delta Dental of Wisconsin Scholarship, awarded to students pursuing a degree in the dental assisting or dental hygiene fields at Blackhawk.

She’s also learned not to procrastinate - a skill she has acquired since starting at Blackhawk.

For students looking at their college options, Brittany highly recommends the college.

“It’s a very accommodating college, and there is always someone that is going to help you with any obstacle you have or answer any questions you have,” she said.

Planning to graduate in Spring 2024, Brittany hopes to get a job as a dental hygienist in Janesville.

The Delta Dental of Wisconsin Scholarship was created through the Blackhawk Technical College Foundation by the Delta Dental of Wisconsin Foundation to award scholarships to students pursing a degree in both dental assisting and the dental hygiene fields of study at Blackhawk Technical College. Their scholarship aims to support students on their journey to sharing oral health with all populations. The mission of Delta Dental of Wisconsin Foundation is to initiate, collaborate with, and support programs that extend to dental care, ensure a strong dental workforce, and improve the oral health of underserved and vulnerable populations. Each semester, a $500 scholarship award is provided to a student studying in the dental assisting program; and a $1000 scholarship award is provided to a student studying in the dental hygiene program. This scholarship is available to Wisconsin residents only and preference is given to students who are members of underrepresented groups.
