Working full-time and attending college right after high school was daunting for Elyssa Stichauf, a Stoughton High School graduate. But now that she is older and has the support of Blackhawk’s advisors and instructors, Elyssa is on track to becoming a registered nurse.

“I have wanted to become a nurse for a very long time, and I am finally accomplishing that dream,” she said.

Elyssa attempted to complete a General Anatomy class three times prior to enrolling at Blackhawk last fall, but she wasn’t successful. After enrolling at Blackhawk, she passed the class with a higher grade than she ever thought possible.

“I think it has to do with being older now and more dedicated to school, but I also had my teacher who took the time to explain to me what I was confused about,” she said.

Outside of class, Elyssa was elected to the Wisconsin Student Nurses Association Board for the 2023-24 term. The appointment came in February at the Wisconsin Student Nurses Association Annual Conference, where students participated in numerous educational breakout sessions on nursing issues and acted as delegates for the House of Delegates meeting.

Mary Mather, faculty advisor of the Student Nurses Association, said Elyssa has jumped opportunities to learn more about her intended profession through the association.

“Elyssa is an intelligent, caring individual whose calm demeanor makes her the perfect candidate for success in the nursing program and as a registered nurse,” she said.

Currently working at a memory care facility, Elyssa plans to graduate in spring 2025. Following graduation, she plans to earn her bachelor’s degree online from UW-Madison and eventually become a nurse practitioner for palliative or hospice care.
