Finding Professional Success on a Non-Linear Path

Heather Goold’s path to becoming a panel electrician was far from linear. She had previously attended college but was now working full-time. She knew she wanted to get into the skilled trades but wasn’t sure what next steps to take.

“One of my biggest obstacles has been making time between working full time and going to college full time. I live on my own so trying to continue my education while providing for myself has been difficult,” she said.

But at Blackhawk, she found the support she needed to not only determine her next steps but to thrive.

“Thanks to BTC, not only have I been able to get into a field of study I'm passionate about, they also have helped me find a job in my field,” said Heather, who is in the Automation Systems Technology program and works at Automation Solutions of America (ASA), a division of The Morse Group. “My experience at Blackhawk is something I never expected. From my professors who work with me and my busy work schedule, to helping me in the labs when I'm completely oblivious to what I'm supposed to be doing. If anything, I want to say thank you the most to them. I've went to college before, but not to a college like this with professors who truly want to see me succeed.”

Heather especially credits John Dorcey, her electro-mechanical instructor, for his guidance and help securing the job at ASA. Heather has three semesters left, and she is looking forward to learning as much as she can.

“Never be afraid to ask for help, that's what everyone is here for. Blackhawk Technical College has given me more opportunities than I ever expected a college would be able to offer me,” she said.
