What is your name? Where did you grow up and what high school did you attend?
My name is Michael Valdivia. I grew up in Beloit and graduated from Beloit Memorial High School.
Why did you choose to attend Blackhawk Technical College?
I chose Blackhawk because it offered a practical, affordable, and community-driven education. The supportive environment and flexible programs made it the best choice for continuing my education while balancing work and personal commitments.
What is your area of study? Is there something that drew you to the program?
I’m studying Business Management. I’ve always had an interest in leadership and helping organizations run efficiently. Blackhawk’s hands-on approach and real-world focus really stood out to me.
How has Blackhawk helped you to pursue or complete your goals?
Blackhawk has given me the tools to grow academically and professionally. The faculty are incredibly supportive, and the college offers great opportunities to build leadership skills, like my involvement with the Student Government Association and Business Professionals of America.
Have you had to overcome any obstacles or challenges on your educational journey?
Yes, balancing full-time work while attending school was definitely a challenge. I work late-night shifts as an electrician at Power Solutions International, but I’ve learned to manage my time well and stay committed to my goals.
Are you involved in any student organizations or extracurricular activities at Blackhawk?
Yes, I currently serve as the Student Government Association's parliamentarian and as an event officer for Business Professionals of America. These roles have helped me become more involved on campus and build strong connections with other students.
Are there any academic achievements that you’ve been proud to accomplish in your time at Blackhawk?
I’m proud of maintaining strong grades while staying active in leadership roles and managing a demanding work schedule. I’ve also had the chance to present projects and lead initiatives in my classes, which has boosted my confidence.
Have you been the recipient of any scholarships or grants through the Blackhawk Foundation?
Yes, I’ve been fortunate to receive support through scholarships, which helped relieve some of the financial pressure and allowed me to focus more on my studies.
When do you plan to graduate and what are your plans for life after Blackhawk?
I plan to graduate in Spring 2026. After graduation, I hope to pursue a career in Business Leadership or Human Resources, and possibly work my way into a management training program. I also want to continue supporting youth and families through community service.
What advice do you have for other individuals who are considering Blackhawk?
Don’t be afraid to get involved and ask for help. Blackhawk has so many resources and people who want to see you succeed. You’re not alone here.
Tell us something about yourself you think people would be surprised to know.
I worked as a social worker for four years and have a strong passion for mentoring youth. I’m also working on launching a tutoring program for kids in the community.
If you could have dinner with anybody, alive or dead, who would you choose?
I’d love to have dinner with Jesus. I think a conversation with Him would be incredibly grounding, inspiring, and life-changing.
Who is your biggest influence?
My biggest influence is my mother. Her resilience, faith, and work ethic have taught me the importance of perseverance and compassion.
What’s one thing on your bucket list?
I want to travel to Japan and experience the culture, history, and food firsthand.
