It can be difficult to balance classes, homework and one’s health, but those obstacles haven’t stopped Amy Powell from staying on track for a May 2023 graduation. Amy is a student in the Human Resources Program, a field she has been working in most of her life.
Amy attended Chillicothe High School in Missouri after spending the first part of her life in Wisconsin.
“It was close to home, had the degree program I was in search of and the price was reasonable,” she said about her decision to choose Blackhawk.
In 2021, Amy was selected to participate in the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) District Ambassador program. The program included a one-year term in which students are called upon to make special appearances, give presentations and participate in various events on behalf of the WTCS.
This year, Amy is running for the Phi Theta Kappa International Office Division III Vice President position. She will be participating in the conference, held April 7-9 in Denver, Colorado.
The multiple rounds of campaigning have included question and answer sessions, social media posts and essay/speech writing. She chose her slogan “Grow Together” as a tribute to her love of gardening as well as representing her vision for the region she will represent.
Megan Wisnowski, Student Engagement Specialist, said Amy is always willing to step up and provide leadership or input when needed.
“Amy is a very hard-working and motivated student so I know both of those qualities will help her in the role regardless of what the responsibilities are,” Megan said. “She is one of my go-to students if I am looking for someone to help with a project or event.”
The willingness of the faculty and instructors to help the students is one thing Amy likes most about Blackhawk.
“I love the feeling of family,” she said. She’s also learned that she’s braver than she thought, which she considers the most important thing she’s learned in her time here.
Her advice to prospective students?
“It is worth the time and energy. Never feel afraid to ask for help and most of all participate in as many groups/clubs as you can it makes college life exciting,” she said.
