Flexible Learning Options

Class Delivery Options

At Blackhawk, we understand our students have busy lives and hectic schedules which is why the college offers a variety of flexible learning options to best serve you. Whether you are searching for an online class, a flexible lab schedule, face-to-face courses, or even a class using interactive TV, we want to do everything possible to accommodate you. BTC provides the following learning options:


Icon for Flex Lab Courses

FlexLab

This option allows you to attend when it is most convenient for you, within the designated open lab hours. The non-lab instructional content is delivered face-to-face.

Icon for Hybrid Courses

Hybrid

Your course content is delivered in a blend of face-to-face and online classes. Because 40 to 60 percent of the content is delivered online, you will need access to a computer with a high speed internet connection.

ITV

Classes held at one campus and are delivered live via a compressed video system in specially equipped classrooms at other campuses, giving you the option of attending at the location most convenient for you.

Online icon

Online

The entire course is delivered online, although proctored testing and assessment may be required. Because these courses are 100 percent online, you will need regular access to a computer with a high speed internet connection. 

MyEdChoice icon

MyEdChoice

This option allows you to choose to receive the non-lab instructional content in the following ways:

  • in the classroom at a set class time
  • live during class time using video conferencing
  • online at anytime

Your participation is counted through comments and activities in the classroom or using video conferencing or through online discussion and activities.

Traditional (in-person) icon

Traditional

These courses typically meet several times a week over the course of a semester.  Instructors meet face-to-face with students in a traditional classroom or laboratory setting.

FlexLab Hybrid

The lab times are flexible times but must be done at the specified campus during lab hours. The non-lab instructional content is delivered online.

Lab Hours

Students taking courses in any of the FlexLab formats will be able to choose the times they attend the lab portions of their classes. Students should choose from the lab hours listed below for their programs/courses.

Welding

  • Monday through Thursday - 7:00 a.m. to 8:50 p.m.
  • Friday - 7:00 a.m. to 4:50 p.m.

Students should plan on each one credit class taking approximately 36 hours of combined time (in the lab and on Blackboard).

Laboratory Food Science Tech

  • Monday - 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 - 8:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday - 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 - 8:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday - 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Thursday - 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 - 8:30 p.m.
  • Friday - 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 - 8:30 p.m.
  • Saturday - 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Students should plan on spending approximately one hour per week in the lab for each credit in the class. So a two credit class would be approximately two hours of lab a week and a four credit course would be approximately four hours of lab a week.

Tech Math 1

  • Monday and Wednesday - 12:30 - 1:50 p.m. (lecture - required) 
  • Monday and Wednesday - 11:30 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 3:55 p.m. (lab - flexible)

Students should plan on attending at least two hours in the lab each week.

Monroe

Basic Skills classes - 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday (Rooms 306/309)


Central

Special Math/Science Basic Skills Classes (Nursing Math, ModuMath, Anatomy and Physiology, and Pharmacology Prep) marked as Flex or TBA - 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Friday in room 2216.

Central Basic Skills classes marked as Flex or TBA (Reading, Math, Communication, CNA Math, Accuplacer courses) - 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday in room 2213. It is recommended that students attend at least four hours per week. Students are allowed to sign up and begin after the semester begins. These classes are self-paced.
