Blackhawk's Learning Commons Library provides students with over 300,000 digital resources for flexible access to quality research and learning materials. The Learning Commons Library also has print collections available at two locations – the Student Success Center (SSC) at Central Campus and the Learning Resource Center (LRC) at Monroe Campus – that both feature reference and general collections.

Services & Policies

Blackhawk Technical College students, full- and part-time faculty and staff members with a valid BTC ID card may check out library materials. Residents of Rock and Green counties may obtain library privileges by presenting identification to a library staff member who will issue a one-year library card.

Blackhawk Technical College currently has 100 student loaner laptops and 50 mobile hotspots (a device that provides a free wi-fi network connection) available for students to check out.

To check out a laptop or hotspot, place a hold through the library catalog. Equipment may be picked up at the Central Campus Library (located in the Student Success Center) or at Monroe Campus, Advanced Manufacturing Training Center, or Center for Transportation Studies if indicated. Each item may be checked out on a weekly-basis or for the entire semester. 

Reserve a Laptop/Hotspot

  • General collection books – 14 days (1 renewal)
  • Magazines and journals – 14 days (1 renewal)
  • Audiovisual materials – 14 days (1 renewal)

Rock and Green residents and Upper Iowa University students can renew most materials one time.

Library materials may be returned in person or via campus mail to any BTC library or LRC location. At Central campus, items can be returned to front Library Services Desk or the Student Success Center main desk if staff is available.

Reminder notices will be emailed a few days before library materials are due. After an item's due date has passed, patrons will receive overdue notices by email. Late materials will accrue fines as follows:

  • Books and preschool books, toys and games – 10¢ per day
  • Periodicals (magazines and journals) – 5¢ per day
  • Video and audio recordings – 50¢ per day

Fines will be capped at $15.00 or replacement fee for lost item(s). Patrons with materials overdue by 30 days will be charged the replacement cost in addition to the $15.00 overdue charge.

All patrons are responsible for returning library materials in good condition on or before the due date. If a library item is lost, please contact a library staff member immediately, so arrangements can be made to replace the item. Actual replacement cost will be assessed for library materials which are lost or not returned. If an item is not returned in 30 days and no contact with library staff has been made, it will be assumed that the item is lost. At that time, patrons will be sent a second overdue notice via email or U.S. mail. After 60 days, the college billing office will send a letter to the responsible patron seeking restitution for the cost of the lost item. Library privileges may be suspended until library materials are returned and fines are paid. If a lost item is found and returned in good condition before a replacement has been ordered, the replacement cost will be refunded.
