Law Enforcement Basic Jail Academy

The Basic Jail Academy at Blackhawk Technical College prepares you for an entry-level position as a correctional officer within the county jails. The five-week, 200-hour academy meets Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Department of Justice requires recruits to attend 100% of the training unless excused by the academy director. Excused absences are extremely limited and will only be granted under certain circumstances. After completion, recruits are eligible for certification with the Wisconsin Department of Justice – Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

Additional Program Information

  • Be at least 18 years of age and a United States citizen (required for employment)\
  • Possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license or other such valid operator’s permit recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation
  • Possess a general educational development diploma or be a high school graduate
  • No unpardoned felony conviction
