As a medical assistant, you play an important role in the day to day operations of the doctor’s office or clinic. From the front desk to the exam room to the laboratory, you are the link between the healthcare provider and their patient, their professional associate and their equipment and medication suppliers. It’s a fast-paced job, as medical assistants handle business and administrative as well as medical duties. On the administrative side, you will be in charge of scheduling and receiving patients, obtaining patient information, maintaining medical records, ordering supplies and equipment, overseeing the office, and handling insurance matters, office accounts, fees, and collections. On the medical side, you will see assist with examinations and treatments, take health histories, perform certain diagnostic tests, carry out laboratory procedures and sterilize instruments and equipment.
As a student in Blackhawk's Medical Assistant program, you will receive the training employers are looking for – the technical abilities and the soft skills that take you from being good at your job to being great. You’ll learn in our state-of-the-art lab and exam rooms and during your practicum, which is full time during the last five weeks of the program, you’ll get valuable on-the-job experience. Student placement is extremely high, as graduates of our program are in great demand to work in doctor’s offices, immediate care clinics, ambulatory centers, health insurance companies, business and industrial health centers, and other medical settings.
