Student Creates Her Own Program to Improve Food Safety

Magdalena Doyle used to work in food production. Disappointed in the lack of Good Manufacturing Procedures (GMPs) and quality standards, she quit and spent some time working as a nanny. Still, the desire to see the systems work better and make food production safer never left her. “I decided that to change the system, I needed to have a better understanding of how the system works,” Magdalena said. “In particular, I was interested in food safety and allergen controls. I talked to Chef Joe before I applied to see what his thoughts were, and he was very encouraging. I spent a few evenings pouring over the class catalog and degree requirements, and when I went in to talk to the advisors, I had a class schedule all prepped by semester.”

BTC Names 2020-2021 Alumni of the Year

Brittany Kelly was in one of the first cohorts of students who completed the Medical Lab Tech program when it first launched at Blackhawk. She took that knowledge and has now worked in the blood bank for Mercyhealth’s Janesville location since her graduation in 2013. As this year’s Alumni of the Year, she demonstrates her continued appreciation for the program by regularly returning to share her knowledge.

Area High School Students Receive BTC Foundation Scholarships

Over 20 high school graduates from Rock and Green counties were recently awarded the Blackhawk Technical College High School Scholarship. Each high school in Rock and Green counties was allotted at least one award each for a high school senior committed to attend BTC. Students received this $500, one-time award during their high school’s spring honor ceremony.
