Congratulations to Moira Lafayette, Dean of Health Sciences and Public Safety at Blackhawk Technical College for her selection as one of 20 nationwide recipients of the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) 2021 Postsecondary Leadership Success Program. The program supports current and aspiring leaders in career and technical education (CTE), providing professional and career growth opportunities to leaders at nonprofits and postsecondary institutions offering CTE programs.

This past weekend Donna McKearn would have celebrated her 88th birthday. Donna, a longtime resident of Beloit, spent her life nurturing and caring for children. Therefore, her own children thought it was fitting to celebrate her legacy in our community with the Donna McKearn Memorial Endowed Scholarship at Blackhawk Technical College. According to her son, Tim McKearn of Beloit, "My mom loved children and spent many years working with infants, young children, and their families. We wanted to provide support to individuals wishing to pursue careers in childcare or early childhood work."

New Class of Blackhawk Scholars Announced

Blackhawk Technical College announces ten new Blackhawk Scholars recipients. The program, launched in spring 2020, is an earn-and-learn program in partnership with business and industry, to recruit, educate and graduate students in manufacturing fields where workforce shortages exist. Students simultaneously work and learn on the job and in the classroom.

Rock County Public Health Department Announces Changes to the COVID-19 Vaccine Registration Process

Rock County Public Health Department announces that they will be removing the vaccine registration forms from their website effective today. After a review of the new vaccine registration systems that are now in place, it has been determined that these forms may delay the vaccination process. Anyone who has already signed up with the Rock County Public Health Department, but has not been contacted, will still be matched with a provider and contacted when appointments are available. The Rock County Vaccine hotline will still be available at (608) 352-6727 for anyone who has questions about how to connect with a local vaccine provider.

Staff Spotlight: Sheryl Hooker

In 1998, after moving around the world with her Navy husband, Sheryl and her family finally docked in the Janesville area. Ten years later, she joined the Blackhawk family as the switchboard operator. “I was drawn to the educational setting because I had always wanted to return to college,” she recalled, “but never felt confident in my abilities to be a successful student. After a few months here, I realized I wasn’t alone in this feeling.”
